Background of the Study
Blockchain technology, known for its security, transparency, and decentralization, is being explored as a means to enhance digital library security. At Nigeria Maritime University, blockchain is proposed as a tool to protect digital assets, ensure data integrity, and secure transactions involving digital resources. By implementing blockchain, the library can potentially offer tamper-proof records of resource access, provide secure authentication mechanisms, and improve trust among users (Ekong, 2023). This technological innovation could address several prevalent challenges, such as unauthorized access and data breaches, while providing an immutable audit trail for transactions. In addition, blockchain may facilitate more transparent licensing, sharing, and citation of academic materials. The study will analyze the feasibility of integrating blockchain into digital library systems and evaluate its potential benefits and limitations. User perceptions, system performance, and security enhancements will be assessed to determine whether blockchain can effectively bolster digital library security (Ekong, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite substantial investments in digital libraries, security breaches and unauthorized access remain a significant challenge at Nigeria Maritime University. Traditional security measures have proven insufficient against sophisticated cyber threats (Okeke, 2024). The absence of an immutable, decentralized security system has led to concerns over data integrity and user trust. Blockchain technology offers a promising solution; however, its implementation in the context of digital libraries is still largely unexplored. There is a need to investigate the potential role of blockchain in enhancing security, evaluate its feasibility, and understand its impact on library operations and user confidence.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the potential of blockchain technology in digital library security.
To assess user perceptions of blockchain-based security measures.
To propose a framework for blockchain integration in digital libraries.
Research Questions:
How can blockchain improve digital library security?
What are users’ perceptions regarding blockchain-based security?
What challenges may arise in the integration of blockchain in digital libraries?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores innovative blockchain applications to secure digital libraries. Enhanced security is crucial for maintaining data integrity, user trust, and effective resource management. Findings will inform policy and technology implementation strategies, contributing to the development of more secure academic digital infrastructures (Okeke, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to evaluating blockchain technology in the digital library system at Nigeria Maritime University and does not address broader IT security infrastructures.
Definitions of Terms:
Blockchain Technology: A decentralized, secure digital ledger used for recording transactions.
Digital Library Security: Measures implemented to protect digital resources from unauthorized access.
Data Integrity: The accuracy and consistency of data over its lifecycle.
